Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras Rolls On!
Mardis Gras, French for "Fat Tuesday," is the day before Ash Wednesday, and is sometimes called "Pancake Day." Mardi Gras is the final day of Carnival. Carnival begins 12 days after Christmas and ends on Mardi Gras, which always falls exactly 46 days before Easter. Carnival is an important celebration in most of Europe, except in England where they merely eat pancakes. (Those fun loving Englishmen.) Mardi Gras is a famous celebration in many parts of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Have a party! Celebrate Carnival and Mardi Gras in Albuquerque with King Cakes from Great Harvest. Check out the King Cake story below.

King Cakes
Cherry King Cakes and Cinnamon Almond Cream Cheese King Cakes

King Cake in a panKing Cakes, an important part of the extended celebration, are in remembrance of the three gift-bearing Magi who visited the baby Jesus. Each cake is decorated in the traditional Mardi Gras colors: purple represents justice, green represents faith and gold represents power. A small baby, symbolizing the baby Jesus, is provided with each cake. The person who finds the baby in their slice will be rewarded with good fortune through the year and is also responsible for bringing a King Cake to the next party or gathering. At Great Harvest we fasten the baby outside the cake so you can place it wherever you choose.

Great harvest will bake both Cherry and Cinnamon Almond Cream Cheese King Cakes. These will be decorated with festive doubloons and beads for an authentic New Orleans flair.

We will bake King Cakes Friday and Saturday, February 5th & 6th, and daily from Friday, February 12 through Tuesday, February 16.

DancerJamabalaya soup mix
A LOUISIANA FAVORITE

Jambalaya is very similar to the Spanish dish Paella. Most often, white rice is mixed with numerous variations of vegetables, seafood and meat.

For most traditional Gulf coast dishes the main dish is served over separately cooked rice. For Jambalaya, a rich stock is created from an assortment of vegetables, meat, and seafood. Then, long grain raw rice is added so that the flavors are absorbed by the rice as it cooks.

Easy Does It - Pick up a package of Homemade In Minutes Jambalaya Soup Mix at Great Harvest for your Mardi Gras party.

Pancake & fry panShrove Tuesday is Pancake Day
FOLLOW THE TRADITION WITH GREAT HARVEST PANCAKE MIX

-- WHOLE WHEAT & OAT
-- GLUTEN FREE BUCKWHEAT

In medieval times, "luxury" foods were forbidden during the Lenten season. Pancakes made with eggs, butter and fat were included. So, Shrove Tuesday, the day before Lent, was a day to indulge in pancakes and use up the foods not allowed during Lent.

Always at Great Harvest - Both WHOLE WHEAT & OAT and GLUTEN FREE BUCKWHEAT PANCAKE MIXES are perfect for a delicious, wholesome and easy Shrove Tuesday breakfast.

And see our Recipes page for a delicious Mardi Gras Gumbo!
